Fall is here and so are its Hazards

Wow! Fall is almost here, where did the riding season go? Fall is a beautiful time to ride; the temperatures are a little cooler the leaves are changing. It’s also a little depressing because, well you know winter is coming but, I digress. Fall has a lot of hazards to beware of. Those beautiful leaves that are changing color, sooner or later they fall off the trees and land on…you guessed it, the road. Leaves make for a slippery surface to ride over, especially if they’re a little wet or you’re taking a curve. Harvest season is also upon us. Those nurturers of the land, the farmers are gettin’ those crops in so we can eat. When they come out of the fields, their equipment is dragging mud on to the highway as well as leaving a trail from the bumper crop that spilled out of their overflowing wagons. Their equipment is also a hazard, it’s big and slow moving, take extreme care when passing or approaching from the rear. They can’t see us and they could easily turn into our path. Don’t forget the kids are back in school, a lot of buses on the road, ‘nough said. As always, Ride Safe!

Situational Awareness

WOW! Heavy title. Sounds like something you"d use to play a video game. Well you're not far off. Situational awareness applies to just about anything you do when external elements are involved. Basically you need to be aware of all the things that might affect you. You pull up to an intersection; the cage in front of you has their left turn signal on. You decide to go around the right side of the cage. The driver of the cage decides to turn right and you get hit. You're cruisin' down a city street; a parked cage driver opens their door in front of you forcing you to swerve at the last second. I know we can't predict what others using the highway will do, but we can anticipate what we think they "Might" do. The purpose of this article is "Expect the Unexpected" and prepare for it. As always Ride Safe!
